Appomattox County, anchored by its small county seat of the same name, delivers some of the widest Republican presidential margins in Virginia, with the 2024 result exceeding 51 points in a rural Southside region where agricultural and manufacturing employment dominate.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Appomattox County peaked at eighty-five points in 1912; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1964 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of twenty-nine points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Appomattox County's median household income of $62,853 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 14% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Shelby County and Darke County.
