Denton County's rapid population growth — fueled by Dallas–Fort Worth spillover and a large university presence — has steadily compressed Republican margins from R+40 a decade ago to R+13 in 2024, making it a closely watched indicator of suburban realignment in Texas.
The shift began with civil rights. 1968 marked the realignment in Denton County, by a four points margin. The Republican margin reached its widest at fifty-two points in 1984. The 2024 margin was thirteen points.
The political shift has tracked, in Denton County, the political shift of the South more broadly. A 57% non-Hispanic-white share, a median household income of $111,498, and a 7% poverty rate describe the demographic context. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Placer County and Boone County.
