Ochiltree County, anchored by the small city of Perryton, posted an R+81.5 margin in 2024, placing it among the most one-sided counties in Texas. Its economy centers on agriculture and oil, and its population has hovered near 9,000 for decades.

The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Ochiltree County peaked at eighty-four points in 1912; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1952 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of sixty-one points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.

The economic and demographic context is severe. Ochiltree County's median household income of $70,183 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 12% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Randall County and Hansford County.
