Dallam County, anchored by the feedlot and farming hub of Dalhart, recorded an R+78.3 margin in 2024 — among the widest in the state — reflecting the heavily rural, agricultural character of the Texas Panhandle's western edge.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Dallam County peaked at seventy points in 1936; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1980 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of twenty points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Dallam County's median household income of $71,500 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 12% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Cheyenne County and Lincoln County.
