Gila County's economy has long centered on mining and ranching in the Mogollon Rim highlands, and its rural, majority-Hispanic and Native American precincts nonetheless produce some of Arizona's widest Republican presidential margins.
The Democratic margin in Gila County peaked at fifty-one points in 1936. By 2000 the county had flipped, voting Republican for the first time in many years. The 2024 margin was thirty-eight points, the most Republican-leaning result in the county's modern history.
The economic context is the key. Gila County's median household income of $61,986 sits well below state and national norms, and 17% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The shift here is part of a broader realignment of working-class places across the country. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Washington Parish and Grant County.
