Tunica County, anchored in the Mississippi Delta, is roughly 75% Black and has voted Democratic by double-digit margins in every recent presidential cycle, with its 2024 gap of nearly 39 points ranking among the state's largest.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Tunica County peaked at 100 points in 1916; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1976 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of twenty-seven points. By 2024, the margin had settled into deep Republican territory.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Tunica County's median household income of $39,364 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 31% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Holmes County and Alameda County.
