Gallatin County, tucked into southeastern Illinois along the Wabash River, delivered an R+53.8 margin in 2024—among the widest in a state where statewide results run sharply the other direction. Its population of roughly 6,400 has declined steadily as coal and agriculture shed jobs.
The 2012 election was the turning point, when the Republican candidate carried the county by eighteen points. The 2024 margin was fifty-four points, in line with the county's new direction.
The demographics suggest why. A population of 4,819, a 96% non-Hispanic-white share, and a median household income of $59,219 situate the county in the broader realignment patterns of recent cycles. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Macoupin County and Braxton County.
