Williamsburg's electorate is heavily shaped by William & Mary's student and faculty population, producing one of Virginia's most lopsided presidential margins — Democrat by 44.5 points in 2024 — in a city of fewer than 12,000 residents.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Williamsburg city peaked at seventy-three points in 1912; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2004 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of four points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Williamsburg city's median household income of $75,604 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 19% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Washington County and Juneau City and Borough.
