San Patricio sits along the lower Coastal Bend, anchored by Sinton and the port community of Aransas Pass. Once a swing county with a large Hispanic population, it has shifted toward lopsided Republican margins over the past two decades.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in San Patricio County peaked at sixty-eight points in 1932; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2000 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of fifteen points. By 2024, the margin had settled into deep Republican territory.
The economic and demographic context is severe. San Patricio County's median household income of $69,704 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 15% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Refugio County and Crosby County.
