Montague County, anchored by the small city of Nocona, delivered over 88% of its presidential vote to the Republican column in 2024, reflecting the deep-red pattern common to rural North Texas counties with agricultural and ranching economies.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Montague County peaked at eighty-four points in 1932; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1996 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of five points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Montague County's median household income of $64,545 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 14% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Clay County and Jack County.
