Lake County, hugging the Mississippi River in the state's northwest corner, recorded an R+54.9 margin in 2024 despite a population under 8,000 — making it a study in how rural river-bottom communities vote at near-uniform rates.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Lake County peaked at ninety-four points in 1936; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2008 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of seven points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Lake County's median household income of $28,814 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 32% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Humphreys County and Trousdale County.
