Sumter County's explosive population growth — driven almost entirely by The Villages master-planned retirement community — has made it one of the fastest-growing counties in the U.S., with a distinctly older, white electorate that has produced some of Florida's widest presidential margins.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Sumter County peaked at eighty-one points in 1940; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2000 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of eleven points. By 2024, the margin had settled into deep Republican territory.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Sumter County's median household income of $76,508 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 10% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Polk County and La Paz County.
