Northampton sits at the southern tip of Virginia's Eastern Shore, isolated from the mainland by the Chesapeake Bay. Its majority-minority population — driven by a large Black voting bloc — has consistently returned Democratic margins in a region otherwise trending Republican.

The Democratic margin in Northampton County reached its widest at seventy-five points in 1916. The margin in 2024 was six points — still decisive.

Northampton County's loyalty is rooted in its place. Median household income of $61,632, a 57% non-Hispanic-white share, and a population of 12,059 together describe a community whose political habits are deeply settled. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Orange County and Liberty County.
