Santa Rosa, anchored by the Pensacola suburbs and a large military-connected population near Eglin Air Force Base, recorded an R+51 presidential margin in 2024, placing it among the most consistently one-sided counties in the state.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Santa Rosa County peaked at eighty-four points in 1892; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1964 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of twenty-five points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Santa Rosa County's median household income of $91,922 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 9% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Powhatan County and Houston County.
