Cherokee sits at Atlanta's northern exurban edge, where rapid population growth since 2000 has not eroded its deep Republican lean — the 2024 presidential margin held near R+39, consistent with its pattern over the past two decades.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Cherokee County peaked at sixty-nine points in 1932; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1984 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of fifty-two points. By 2024, the margin had settled into deep Republican territory.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Cherokee County's median household income of $108,115 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 7% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Goochland County and Williamson County.
