Demographics
Wilson County has nearly doubled in population since 2000 as Nashville sprawl pushes east, yet its presidential margins have widened alongside that growth, bucking the suburban moderation seen in many Sun Belt metros.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Wilson County peaked at seventy-one points in 1936; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1996 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of one points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. The median household income of $95,839 is among the lowest at this geographic scale; 8% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Sumner County and Sumter County.
