Choctaw County, in southeastern Oklahoma's Little Dixie region, posted an R+65.4 margin in 2024 — a dramatic reversal from its historically Democratic roots in a rural area shaped by its Native American heritage and agricultural economy.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Choctaw County peaked at sixty-five points in 1932; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2004 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of nine points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Choctaw County's median household income of $44,081 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 23% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Haskell County and Ballard County.
