Morgan County, anchored by Decatur along the Tennessee River, has delivered Republican presidential margins above 50 points in recent cycles, reflecting a rural-to-suburban shift that has deepened conservative alignment across much of northern Alabama.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Morgan County peaked at eighty-five points in 1936; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1984 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of thirty-six points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Morgan County's median household income of $68,845 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 14% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Sullivan County and Chilton County.
