Anchored in Houston's urban core, this heavily Latino and Black district posted an 11.9-point Democratic margin in 2024, reflecting the demographic composition that has made it one of the more reliably blue seats in the Texas Senate.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Texas 22nd State Senate District peaked at eighty-three points in 1932; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1980 election delivered the district to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of seven points. By 2024, the margin had settled into deep Republican territory.
