Butte County's sparse, ranch-heavy landscape anchors a voting pattern that has favored Republican presidential candidates by landslide margins for decades, with 2024's R+60.6 result among the widest in the state.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Butte County peaked at fifty-two points in 2000; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2004 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of fifty-one points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Butte County's median household income of $75,652 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 9% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Meade County and Custer County.
