Bertie County's population is roughly 60% Black, anchoring a durable Democratic lean in a region otherwise trending Republican. In 2024 the margin held at D+15.7, bucking statewide rural shifts.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Bertie County peaked at ninety-six points in 1932; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2004 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of twenty-three points. By 2024, the margin had settled into deep Republican territory.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Bertie County's median household income of $48,750 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 16% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Northampton County and Warren County.
