Lafourche stretches 70 miles down Bayou Lafourche to the Gulf, and its economy—built on offshore energy and commercial fishing—tracks closely with the parish's consistent, wide Republican margins in statewide and federal races.

The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Lafourche Parish peaked at eighty-seven points in 1892; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century.
