Demographics
Virginia 36th State Senate District sits in the Mid-Atlantic and Appalachia. Its political identity was forged in the union halls of the mid-twentieth century, when industrial labor and the Democratic party became, for working people, two faces of the same political fact. That identity held for 9 consecutive presidential elections.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Virginia 36th State Senate District peaked at sixty points in 1912; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2004 election delivered the district to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of seven points. By 2024, the margin had settled into deep Republican territory.
The economic and demographic context is severe. The median household income of $153,637 is among the lowest at this geographic scale; 6% of residents live below the federal poverty line.
