Demographics
West Virginia 12th State Senate District sits in southern Appalachia. Its political identity was forged in the union halls of the mid-twentieth century, when industrial labor and the Democratic party became, for working people, two faces of the same political fact. That identity held for 3 consecutive presidential elections.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in West Virginia 12th State Senate District peaked at forty points in 1964; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2000 election delivered the district to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of six points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. The median household income of $57,705 is among the lowest at this geographic scale; 16% of residents live below the federal poverty line.
