North Dakota is among the most Republican states in the country, and 2024 set its widest presidential margin in at least nine cycles — Donald Trump by 36.4 points (R+36.4), past the R+35.7 of 2016 and the R+33.3 of 2020. It has voted Republican in every presidential election since 1968. The map is nearly uniform: of the state’s 53 counties, Trump carried 51, and many by enormous margins — Slope County at R+81.7, Emmons at R+77.3, the Bakken oil counties of McKenzie at R+69.2 and Williams at R+67.6. Even Fargo’s Cass County, the largest and closest, went R+8.3.
The two exceptions are the Native American reservations, and they have held the same way for cycles. Sioux County — Standing Rock, where the 2016 pipeline protests drew thousands — gave Kamala Harris a 38.7-point margin (D+38.7), the widest Democratic result in the state; its population is 83.2 percent American Indian and other single-race residents by the 2024 ACS, with a poverty rate of 43.3 percent. Rolette County — Turtle Mountain, 75.9 percent the same and one in five reporting Turtle Mountain Chippewa ancestry — went D+28.0. Both have voted Democratic in 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024, the lone blue marks on an otherwise Republican map.
The profile underneath is white, agricultural, and young. White residents are 81.7 percent of the state, the largest ancestries German (34.5 percent) and Norwegian (20.3 percent), a legacy of Northern Plains homesteading; American Indian and other single-race residents add 4.7 percent statewide, concentrated on the reservations. The median age is 36.4, fourth-youngest of the fifty states, held down by the oil-and-gas boom that pulled young workers to the western Bakken. Median household income is $76,657, just under the U.S. $80,734, with poverty at 10.8 percent. In 2026 the at-large U.S. House seat is the only federal race: Julie Fedorchak (R) faces Trygve Hammer (D) in a rematch of 2024.
