Abbott enters with a staggering $106M war chest — the largest of any gubernatorial candidate in the country — and leads Hinojosa 49-42 in early polling. Hinojosa has energized Democrats with her fight against school vouchers and raised $1.3M in 10 weeks, but Texas hasn’t elected a Democratic governor since Ann Richards in 1990 and hasn’t elected a Democrat to any statewide office in over 30 years. Abbott also faces primary challenges from his right on border enforcement, but his $106M moat makes that a non-issue. The 7-point general election gap is closer than expected but not close enough.
